Labor in Film: My Work, My Risk, My Sweat

Summer 2024

Despite being advertised as romance, crime, horror, or heroism, many popular films are often revolve around work. This class will examine portrayals of working and having a job in films, drawing from critical economic, philosophical, and sociological theories of work. Various types of labor and the economic systems shaping them will be analyzed, with a particular focus on how gender and race influence onscreen representations of work. No expertise required. 

Films to be covered include: 

  • Thief (1981)
  • Witness (1985)
  • My Beautiful Laundrette (1985)
  • Support the Girls (2018)
  • First Cow (2019)

Doug Carmody

Doug Carmody is a film theorist and educator who lives in Minneapolis, MN, with a passion for teaching accessible courses on film. He focuses on critical theory and psychoanalysis, but harbors a soft spot for New Korean Cinema and horror movies.
